
An experienced and highly effective academic researcher, Claire Soulie is a comparative historian with a strong academic background. After gaining her BA from the Université Jean Moulin Lyon III, she went on to study for an MA and PhD at the University of Essex, where she now teaches. Her areas of interest include: 19th and 20th century British and French colonial history, history of the press in France, Britain and Russia, and questions of propaganda and censorship in democratic countries.
Besides her own research and teaching commitments she has also been involved with a major research project investigating private philanthropy and charitable organisations in the 19th and 20th century Europe. As a native French speaker Claire is able to work with French archive material and is also used to working within the French Archival system. Her language skills also extend to reading and speaking Russian, Italian and German.
